Donald Trump Says McCain No War Hero: ‘I Like People Who Weren’t Captured’

Donald Trump escalated his feud with Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday in a way that probably wasn’t the most politically astute.
Appearing at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Trump decided to make the case that McCain is not a war hero. Asked by moderator Frank Luntz why he would call a war hero like McCain a “loser,” Trump replied, “He’s not a war hero.”
“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people who weren’t captured, I hate to tell you.”
McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War.
After hearing boos from the crowd, Trump backed off a bit: “Perhaps he’s a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
Trump was referring to McCain calling the people who attended Trump’s recent immigration rally in Arizona “crazies.”
“This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain recently told the New Yorker magazine, speaking of Trump’s July 11 rally. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”
The Washington Post reported Friday that Trump is trying to recruit a primary challenger in Arizona to try to defeat McCain in his 2016 re-election bid.
*******************************On the one hand, never disparage a POW for being a POW. Bad move, Trump. On the other hand, F John McCain! Just because he was a POW doesn’t mean he has any business being a Senator. He’s been riding that horse for decades.
The word of the day.

It’s fine line to walk
You can’t criticize them unless you were there beside them
Yet some sure pimp their wartime experiences like McCain and Kerry
What Trump said is like something Patton would have said

I don’t like McCain’s politics but this is over the top. Trump is too much into personal shots. I don’t mind the political shots, but we don’t need elementary school taunts in a presidential candidate.

To: servo1969Trump went too far on that one. But, name some of the great POW war heroes from WWII, or Korea, or WWI.
Oh, I dunno.
Daniel Streckler, James Stockdale, Clifford Acree, Louis Zemperini (you may have heard of him) John Malcom “mad Jack” Thorpe, Gurbaksh Singh, Everett Alvarez, Jr., Douglas Bader, James Hargest, Erich Hartmann, James Robinson “Robbie” Risner, Charles Upham (my personal fave) – shall I go on?
You can’t, because hero status from most all wars was achieved in battle, not in a POW camp.
To: stanneHe will have to walk that one back. When has Trump ever walked a stupid comment back? He’ll just attack anyone who dares criticize him for this.75 posted on 7/18/2015 12:48:24 PM by DoodleDawg

I’m no John McCain fan, but what Trump said is pathetic.
The man did five years in the Hanoi Hilton and for that he deserves better.
We can, do, and will disagree with him politically, but everyone who has been a POW has been disparaged by a guy looking to score cheap political points.

To: stanneIf he loves the military the way he says he does and he wants credit for it, he’ll find himself in a hole with the vets. There are, what, one or two Republican candidates who put on a uniform? I’m certainly not going to criticize someone who didn’t serve, I didn’t, but by not serving I think they’ve waived the right to criticize the service of those who did. Trump can slam McCain for his stand on the issues and his votes in the Senate, but for him to say that McCain wasn’t a hero because he was captured is way beyond the pale.90 posted on 7/18/2015 12:56:26 PM by DoodleDawg
I am no fan of McCain, but for Donald “Five Deferments” Trump to disparage POWs, implying they were somehow at fault for being captured is disgraceful.
Stick a fork in him.

Adm. Stock dale on McCain: In fact, a few weeks ago I received a call from an old friend who is also close to the George W. Bush campaign soliciting comments on Mr. McCain’s “weaknesses.” As I told that caller, I think John McCain is solid as a rock.
And I consider it blasphemy to smudge the straight-arrow prisoner-of-war record of a man who was near death when he arrived at Hoa Loa prison 1967: both arms broken, left leg broken, left shoulder broken by a civilian with a rifle butt.
To: servo1969Last time Trump was thinking about running, the media dug up his draft records.Donald Trump’s Own Secret: Vietnam Draft Records
It’s not much of a secret, but you can tell from the article just how much they hate him.
Donald is part of what you might call the “glass house generation” and probably shouldn’t be throwing stones even at one particular veteran and POW.
Does Trump’s scattershot, “what I’m thinking right now” approach really make people confident that he’ll be able to focus on the country’s problems if he gets elected? Could it be he’s going to keep up the flame wars and little feuds even from the White House? Like Obama with Fox News only more so?
To: Savage BeastTrump also fails completely to declare his positions on Obamacare, the homosexual agenda/religious freedom, “global warming” and the environmentalist agenda, Common Core, the minimum wage, or limited government conservatism. For people who crave validation of their own anger and frustration, Trump is great.
For people who crave a candidate upon whom it’s easy to project virtually any gratifying political philosophy, Trump is great.
For people who want to see America begin a long, fundamental restoration toward her original limited government with God-given rights Constitutional foundations openly established along Judeo-Christian values, Ted Cruz is the sole candidate.
IIRC, McAmnesty was a bit of a, to put it generously, a troubled pilot, and he had to bail on his damaged F-4. He was an unnecessary risk taker, and that’s what got him shot down in the first place.
McAmnesty has overplayed his war hero status and it’s time for the “maverick” to STFU and retire. He has been the source of much failure in the Republican coalition to hold the line.
I reference his reference to Sen. Cruz as a wacko-bird, and other sellouts of Republicans, and of the people as a whole.
To: ScottWalkerForPresident2016I despise that whack job McCain as much as any other Freeper, but mocking a POW crosses the line.Just last week I predicted that Trump would eventually implode from Foot in Mouth syndrome.
This is a lot quicker than I thought.

Having had his 700 mph plane hit by a SAM, breaking one’s shoulders on ejection from the cockpit, and then breaking a leg on landing – I’ll give McCain the benefit of the doubt on “having been captured.”
I admire Trump’s willingness to speak his mind, but ultimately, that same habit will cause the blowhard to self-destruct.
To: MarieTrump was defending US against an anti-American, political RINO.
Mclame has been a Demoncrat mole within the Republican party for 30 years now. Fark him and Go Trump!!

Now he back tracked….yep, Trump has guts all right
At a press availability following his remarks, Trump denied saying that McCain isn’t a war hero and said, “If somebody’s a prisoner, I consider them a war hero.”
So, now is he saying that McCain is a hero for being captured? Go on, Trumpers…spin away.

Trump Awakens Kerry’s Vietnam Anger With Slam On McCain The Daily Beast ^ | July 19, 2015 | Mike Barnicle Posted on 7/19/2015, 5:22:09 PM by 2ndDivisionVet
The Iran nuclear deal that could prevent a war must have evoked another deal to end a war almost 50 years ago in the Secretary of State.
John Kerry was angry.
“Listen to this. Listen to what Trump just said about John McCain,” Kerry was saying over the phone. “ ‘He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.’ ”
“That’s unbelievable,” Kerry said. “That’s beyond outrageous.”
“John and I have some serious differences on a lot of things but he is nothing other than a hero and a good man. Where was Trump when John got shot down over North Vietnam? In school? At a party? Where was he?”
For many months now, years even, Kerry has been point man in Barack Obama’s attempt to restrict Iran’s plan to develop a nuclear bomb. He has been a walking high wire act, traveling a region that is nothing less than a geographical bonfire filled with the debris of failed nations, countries that have collapsed into chaos and terror largely because of the contrived plans of men like Dick Cheney who dreamed of the day when Saddam Hussein could be toppled. The conservative ideologues got their wish while the United States got a larger, longer war and the Middle East became an even bigger source of horror and death….1 posted on 7/19/2015, 5:22:09 PM by 2ndDivisionVet
Great, now we KNOW we are on the right track. I’m so tired of everything happening being a downer for conservatives, ( in favor of liberals). Nice to ruin their day for a change…we need to find more buttons to push! What else would disgust a liberal?

Same place The Donald was when HE was shot down?
Oops – sorry – that was by Stormy Daniels, at the Plaza Hotel.

To: DoughtyOneThe only think Kerry earned related to the war was a prison sentence for providing false testimony before the U. s. Senate.I would think that Kerry negotiating with the enemy in Paris while his country was at war and Americans were dying in battle would be even worse. Treason is punishable by death or imprisonment for not less that 5 years.37 posted on 7/19/2015, 5:39:47 PM by Fresh Wind (Falcon 105)
