The featured image is of the late, great concert producer Bill Graham riding a giant joint at the climax of the 1978 New Years countdown. It was the closing of Winterland and I was somewhere in the crowd.
The Dead have posted an official version YouTube version of The Closing of Winterland DVD. The San Francisco PBS station KQED broadcast the show live. Their feed was used for the DVD transfer hence the cheesy and dated graphics.
Pro Tip: If you watch the show on YouTube you can click on selected numbers in the first comment and play your favorite tunes.
The Dead hit the stage at midnight with a rousing version of Sugar Magnolia as well as a balloon drop worthy of a political convention.
Happy New Year from all of us at First Draft and the good old Grateful Dead.
