Carnival is shifting into high gear, so it’s time for some New Orleans music to follow up on The Carnival Tunes Dozen.
Antoine Domino and Dave Bartholomew wrote Ain’t That A Shame in 1955. It was a monster hit reaching the top of the Billboard R&B chart and number 10 on the pop chart. It put Team Domino-Bartholomew on the map.
We begin with the song’s co-writer:
I think of Ain’t That A Shame as a guy song, so I was pleased to see versions by Ella Mae Morse and Crystal Clark:
I’m one of the few people who likes John Lennon’s album of early rock covers. The recording sessions were a clusterfuck, Ain’t That A Shame?
Cheap Trick. Say no more.
The older I get the more I appreciate the greatness of George Benson as a singer and guitarist:
I didn’t find an instrumental version of Ain’t That A Shame that met my standards. Instead, here’s Dave Bartholomew with a trad jazz version of his own song: DAVE SINGS.
That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to Antoine Domino and Dave Bartholomew Thanks for all the great music. It’s what Danny, Mac, and Pete would want. Never argue with them.
