One thing you may not know about me is that I watch a lot of food teevee: Master Chef, Top Chef, Next Level Chef; a veritable chiffonade of chef shows. I had, however, never seen any of the Cooking With Kamala videos before. That’s right, the Veep is a foodie and a helluva cook.
The videos have been up since 2019, so they were shot with *that* presidential election in mind. It’s time to revive them for *this* election.
After perusing the Cooking With Kamala site at YouTube, I asked myself if Kamala will be the best cook elected president. The New York Times made itself useful for a change and published a piece the other day about the Veep’s culinary exploits and past presidential cooks:
Only a handful of presidents have had a keen interest in cooking. Dwight Eisenhower popularized a method for grilling steaks directly on the coals. Jimmy Carter considered himself a good country cook. Abraham Lincoln was known to put on an apron.
But no candidate this close to the White House has the kitchen skills of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency. In the way Donald Trump uses the golf course as both a source of relaxation and a political backdrop, Ms. Harris uses the kitchen.”
Grilling doesn’t count. It’s man cooking. The Veep is a serious home cook who, if she weren’t so busy, would stand a chance of winning Master Chef or at least one of those shows where home cooks challenge chefs.
There are a grand total of seven videos online at Cooking With Kamala. I have selected three to share with you.
We begin with Kamala cooking masala dosa with the actress Mindy Kaling. Mmm, masala. Pass the nan, man.
Our second video stars the next POTUS with do-gooder chef, Jose Andres. Give the man a Nobel Peace Prize already. He’s earned it by feeding people in disaster and war zones.
Finally, Kamala with Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio. Did he shine his bald pate just for her? Discuss amongst yourselves.
It’s time to pack our knives and go.
