Dr. A and I are in Las Vegas for our nephew’s wedding, so I thought this week’s tune should reflect that. I have yet to say Viva Las Vegas but there’s still time.
Viva Las Vegas was written in 1964 for the movie of that same name by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. It’s one of the King’s finest films. What’s not to love about Bill Demarest as Ann-Margret’s father? They look nothing alike, so she must resemble her unseen mother.
We begin with Elvis Presley:
German chanteuse Nina Hagen cut the song in 1989:
The Residents are perhaps the quirkiest band ever. They put their spin on this week’s tune on their Elvis album, The King & Eye.
ZZ Top had a hit with the Pomus-Shuman classic in 1992:
Shawn Colvin. Say no more.
Finally, the neo-swing band Royal Crown Review with a 21st Century version of Viva Las Vegas:
That’s it for this week. Here’s hoping that I survive the heat and glitz in Vegas this weekend. It’s what Bogie, Betty, and Frank would want. Never argue with them.
