Piece Of My Heart

The heart tattoo is back. Want a piece of it? I thought not.

Piece Of My Heart was written in 1967 by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Russell aka Bert Berns. Both songwriters had multiple pen names but it’s unclear why. As far as I know, neither was on the lam. Oh well, what the hell.

This week’s tune was first recorded by Erma Franklin, Aretha’s big sister:

The definitive version was cut by Janis Joplin and her hippie friends. I have a notion what they were holding.

Stax Records was big on duets. This one comes from an album of them, Boy Meets Girl:

Bryan Ferry crooned the Ragovoy-Russell classic in 1973:

Etta James. Say no more.

Finally, one of my all-time favorite names, Phoebe Snow. She’s a helluva singer as well.

That’s it for this week. Let’s drink to the resistance. It’s what Janis would want. Never argue with her.
