Presidential debate possibly to be held in New Orleans

This is a great idea…

WASHINGTON — All six U.S. senators running for their
party’s 2008 presidential nomination Thursday signed
onto a letter from Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., asking that
New Orleans host one of the candidate debates.

Signing the letter to the Commission on Presidential
Debates were Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York,
Barack Obama of Illinois, Joseph Biden of Delaware and Chris
Dodd of Connecticut, and Republicans John McCain of Arizona
and Sam Brownback of Kansas.

Landrieu prepared the letter after Women of the Storm,
joined by Dillard, Loyola, Tulane and Xavier universities,
proposed holding one of the presidential debates at the
Ernest N. Morial Convention Center as a way to spotlight
continuing challenges facing post-Katrina New Orleans. Women
of the Storm is a nonpartisan group devoted to getting
national leaders to focus on recovery issues.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Blackwater’s headquarters in the Katrina zone are at the World Evangelism Bible College and Seminary, where the company rents a portion of the nearly abandoned campus from its founder, disgraced TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart.
The contractors refer to their headquarters as Fort Jesus, or Camp God.
Swaggart, a fiery fundamentalist Christian preacher, was a pioneer of televangelism, building an empire that reached its zenith in the 1980s, when annual collections topped $150 million…These days, the campus is a ghost town. Buildings remain half-finished, frozen in mid-construction by the scandal.
“For us, the place is perfect,” said Greg Krebs, Blackwater’s manager in Baton Rouge. “It has dormitories, classrooms, a cafeteria and a gym. That’s everything we need.”
