Washington State Ruined My Marriage

And how hard is this to explain to people, really:

Gov. Chris Gregoire on Wednesday said she’ll put forward legislation to legalize marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

The proposal will be introduced during the legislative session that starts Monday. If it’s approved, Washington would become the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.

“Today, I’m announcing my support for a law that gives same-sex couples in our state the right to receive a marriage license in Washington – the same right given our heterosexual couples,” Gregoire said before a crowd of gay marriage supporters at her office. “It is time, it is the right thing to do, and I will introduce the bill to make it happen.”

The governor spoke for 20 minutes, laying out what she sees as the moral and legal reasons for the move, as well as the evolution of her personal views over the years.

“I have been on my own journey. I will admit that. It has been a battle for me with my religion,” she said.“I have always been uncomfortable with the position that I have taken publicly. And then I came to realize the religions can decide what they want to do, but it is not ok for the state to discriminate.”

I was talking to commenter chuckchuck about this today, the constant scare tactic by the right that at some point the gay-friendly state will force Good Christian Bigots to marry gay couples and ordain gay people and generally get all gay up in their religion. But this is exactly the argument that needs to be made in response.

In other words, Christians can do whatever they want in the privacy of their own churches. Just so long as they don’t shove it in our states all the time.

Right. That is the entire fucking point of SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Dumbasses. I don’t know why they don’t get that. The state CANNOT tell your church what to do. They cannot tell a church whom to marry or whom to bury or whom to grant communion to. That is the whole FUCKING POINT. So yes, please embrace separation of church and state and hello, liberal fuckheads, next time some bigot yammers on about how “Oh La Obama is making my priest perform a man-on-dog marriage,” respond NO THAT IS THE POINT OF SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE YOU FUCKWIT.
Sorry but I really do get quite upset at the ignorance of this country on one of our founding principles. Liberals and conservatives seem equally ignorant of religion.
For a more academic, less vitriolic, discussion, I wrote about this back in 2009 and in particular noted thatthose Socialist abortion loving Scandinavian countries all had a state religion until really recently. If you were born in Norway, until a few years ago you were automatically a member of the Lutheran church. Also, the government appointed Lutheran church officials and seminary officials. That is what it means to have a state religion. And yet, Norway has very liberal social policies.
Which just proves that the culture is secularizing, regardless what anyone of a religious bent wants or hopes or is trying to prevent or whatever. Secularization is a product of our prosperity, NOT a product of lack of God in our government. Just look at Scandinavia and you will see what I mean.
So if you think Jesus is against abortion and taxes and loves free markets and whatever crackpot notions you’ve cooked up that aren’t in the Bible, just remember: governments reflect what the culture is doing. So the very LAST thing you should want is to have more God in the government.
