Fall/Winter Do-Something Project: Help a School District Attacked by the NRA

Among the many fake wingnut freakouts this week was a full-on Internet pigfuck designed to rile up the web’s most rabid and sic them on a small Wisconsin school district.

The Eau Claire Area School District hosts a veterans’ program every year that invites the local kiddos to learn about our history and honor the vets. It’s the usual nicey-nice community thing, only this year the school district said look, we live in media culture of 24-7 school shooting coverage. The sound of gunshots wigs kids and their parents out. Couldja maybe not do the rifle salute you do every year?

“We like to honor the veterans; we bring them in on a regular basis,” says Tim Libham, the Executive Director of Administration with the district. “There are just some conditions that we have to adhere to and the shooting of guns, even with blanks, is something we don’t feel is appropriate given society, and the concerns that we have and that the community has, on school premises.”

Leibham says the district wants to accommodate the programs but has to keep the well-being of the students and their families in mind as well

Leibham says, “We’d had family and students that were uneasy, even with blanks being fired on school premise.”

The head of the local “patriotic council,” which I’m sure is much less creepy than it sounds, was a little peeved at the change in plans:

But, Olsen says when it comes to firing the 21-gun salute [sic] during the program, there shouldn’t be limitations. She says, “I was hoping maybe we could find a compromise, but when it comes to the weapons, there was no compromise.”

Because you either fire a gun or you don’t, but whatever. The patriots found an alternate location — a Burger King, which is depressing — and everyone involved went on with their lives.

HA HA JUST KIDDING CUE THE NRA FREAKOUT:

The public response to our post has been literally overwhelming. The story has been shared by the NRA News, and it’s the 3rd most shared story they’ve posted in the last month! This story has more hits on our website than any other post, but more importantly many, many of you have called, emailed, and reached out to the Eau Claire School District to politely voice your dissatisfaction over their decision to break from the 80+ year Veteran’s Day tradition of holding 21 gun salute on school grounds.

We’ve received word that most of your interactions with the school district are going unanswered, BUT take heart because the message is getting through!

They have, natch, changed nothing. As of today, these chucklefucks have posted thousands of comments on the Eau Claire School District Facebook page, decrying the way the school district spit on veterans, kicked them in the face, and then made them watch as they performed abortions with American flag poles.

You should be ASHAMED of your actions. What a slap in the face to those who have put their lives on the line to protect and serve our country. I hope this goes national.

EC school leadership is disgusting and unpatriotic.

Shame on this school! There is nothing wrong with guns but there however something wrong with people…Stupid is …. Lacking intelligence or common sense

Those are some of the more civil. There are also numerous comments calling out the school district for canceling the entire veterans’ program … posted to a photo album depicting the program. And then there’s this gem, posted by someone explaining why she pulled her kids out of school:

“I don’t agree with any of there social or anti-religious standings and don’t want fed-ed.”

Yes. So glad you’re home-schooling. You wouldn’t want your children to learn about the nefarious difference between “there” and “their.”

The school superintendent, to whom I want to send a case of scotch today, tried to explain that they did in fact have a (gun-less) program honoring veterans, to which the flying monkeys of the right’s venerated news sources shrieked NOT GOOD ENOUGH:

The parents that complained aren’t true Americans. At one time there were gun related programs in schools all over this nation. The reason they are so scarce now is because of all the liberal/progressive trash that thrive on destroying American history and freedoms. Sad when something going all the way back to the 30’s is killed because of some Anti-American pansy liberals. The purpose of this holiday is to remember, thank and pay tribute to those that have served this country, it’s not about the flag our country contrary to what that idiot stated.

These people filled the Internet for five days with exhortations to their fellow citizens to sack up and just get over any nervousness about gunshots and schoolkids occupying the same space. They went on and on and on, calling anybody expressing reservations an anti-American pussy.

Yet when asked I’m sure 98 percent of them would say no amount of security is too extreme to prevent terrorism. When asked I’m sure they’d shriek in horror at the idea of NOT taking their shoes off in the airport or bombing the bejeesus out of any country that looked at us sideways. I’m sure the vast majority of them were fine with shooting Michael Brown in the back, are good with tasering old people holding butter knives, and generally like just fine the fact that their president can read their e-mail any damn time he chooses. Those are all reasonable reactions to a little fear.

A volley of shots in a schoolyard? How dare you so much as twitch?!

Now, these are Wisconsin public schools, which means they’re already getting the shit kicked out of them on a regular basis by the governance of that champion of public education, Scott Walker. So much so that one of the schools is taking to the Internet to ask for donations for books and pillows, so that the children can do this outrageous thing called learning to read in an environment slightly different from a prison:

We all know the quote about giving a man a fish (which only feeds him a day) vs. teaching a man to fish (which feeds him a lifetime). That is how I feel about teaching reading! It is a lifelong skill that opens so many doors.

My 2nd graders attend a public school serving k-5 graders where about 82% of the students receive free and/or reduced lunch. They are a group of hard working, sweet kids who are genuinely excited about learning.

You know what to do. Take the hate directed at these schools this week, and turn it into joy.

Let’s get that project funded by the end of the weekend, and take on another from the district next week. Let’s see how many we can help out by Christmas. Let’s show the district the Internet isn’t all angry gun nuts and bad spellers, and let’s give teachers whose job was made pointlessly harder by dickbags something nice to take home at the end of the week.

  1. I cannot emphasize enough how goddamn LOUD gunshots are when you rarely come in contact with guns. My grandfather passed away 6-7 years ago and was given military honors by the local Foreign Legion as he was a purple heart veteran. We knew it was coming, but I swear I and half the mourners jumped with the first round of the salute, still jumped with the second, and only winced at the third.

    . . but you know, that’s because we’re obviously socialist gun-grabbing pussies.
