Hi – folks – just couldn’t get in the groove this week.
Last week’s three-post bender may have given me a bit of a hangover, so just one thread today.
However, it’s a doozy:
When will Jim Robinson banish Trump supporters from FR, like he did in 2007 with Giuliani advocates?
one man’s opinion…
Posted on 7/25/2015 4:15:15 PM by ken5050
On 4/23/2007, Jim Robinson posted a manifesto, “Giuliani as the GOP presidential nominee would be a dagger in the heart of the conservative movement” (and a knife in the back) . The thread was subtitled, “The only difference in a Liberal Rudy Giuliani and Liberal Hillary Clinton is the fact of which bathrooms they select to use and there are some who are willing to even question that.
*************************************************JimRob then proceeded to banish all the pro-Rudy posters from FR. It was a purge of fairly epic proportions.Prior to that, there had been considerable support for Rudy on FR. A few months earlier, Rudy had actually placed second in a straw poll on FR. The “Rudybots” as they were termed, were actively posting pro Giuliani threads pretty much 24/7.
What finally led Jim Robinson to take this step were Giuliani’s comments in support of the Roe v. Wade decision at the May 3rd GOP presidential debate.
Prior to that, Rudy had increasingly come under the microscope at FR. The “Giuliani Truth File” was a stand alone category on the FR home page. There was an ongoing “STOP RUDY NOW News & Information Thread” that was featured.
Now let me state a few things for the record.
1. Jim Robinson is absolutely correct that a pro-choice position is anathema to FReepers. We may disagree on other topics, but this is our hill, on which we will all stand and die together. Rudy could not be the GOP nominee for that reason alone.
2. Many questioned whether Jim Rob should take such a drastic course of action..banning hundreds of people. Some felt that it would be better to engage in ongoing debate and discussion among ourselves. That was never the question. Indeed, it was never up for debate. I lost several good friends, of many years standing, that day, but I never questioned his absolute right to take that course of action. It is his website; he is free to run it as he sees fit, and those who can’t abide with his decisions have the freedom to go elsewhere.
Now that we have that out of the way, let us turn our attention to “The Donald.”
Trump is NOT a conservative.
He is not even a Republican. He was a registered Democrat from 2001-2009.
He has given far more to Democrats than to Republicans.
For most of his life, he was strongly, and proudly pro-choice. IOW, he was OK with killing babies.
He will NOT pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee, and will not promise to NOT run a third-party race.
What Trump IS, is a narcissistic, megalomaniacal, bloviating asshole. It is beyond me how so many self-proclaimed conservatives here at FR could be supporting this clown. He is utterly unfit to serve as NYC Sanitation Commissioner, let alone as President.
That is of course their absolute right to do so.
But what I fail to understand is why Jim Robinson has not as yet banished all the “Trumpsters” from FR? What, pray tell, makes “the Donald” acceptable here, whereas Giuliani was not?
Because Trump is doing a wonderful service.
He’s an awful candidate and I oppose him becoming the R nominee.
However, his CANDIDACY is wonderful. He’s making the Republicans address real issues. He’s changing the dialogue. His refreshing honesty and directness has yielded ever-increasing poll numbers, and may give a lesson to people I do support (Ted Cruz).
I am against banning Trump supporters at this time. The man is doing a world of good.
While I agree with you on Trump – who is not a conservative and has made other attempts at running for office where he washed out because it was clear that he was just a mouth with no mind, and not even a conservative mouth. – I don’t think JR eliminated Rudy supporters as such, but just because they were such pests.
Trump posters are falling into the pest category, btw.
There are many “Jim Rob never did no purges, nuh-uh” posts:
I remember saying something positive about Giuliani and it was in the absence of any decent contenders
Jim gave some very negative feedback and it was explicitly regarding Giuliani s being pro abortion
I don’t have any problem staying away from pro abortion candidates. And it’s Jim’s site. So that was it.
I never got banned
There was no banning
Beard the lion much?
I’ve been here fifteen years, and found myself on the opposite side of Jim’s candidate selections quite a few times.
Haven’t been banned yet.
And I saw what happened to the Rooty-rooters, and they brought it on themselves.
Oops – maybe there were bannings.
The funny thing here, of course, is that the “Rudy-rooters” bannings were a drop in the bucket compared to the Romney purges of late 2011.
I don’t think that even the OP is willing to mention that era of mass bannings.
And, (speaking of the mass Romney bannings) to show just how deep the Free Republic memory hole can go:
To: ken5050; AllBut what I fail to understand is why Jim Robinson has not as yet banished all the “Trumpsters” from FR?
Because if you “banish” a whole swathe of people simply because they support some different candidate than you do, it’s a good indicator that you’re a petty, small-minded, idiotic, low-intelligence moron who can’t deal reasonably with other people who disagree with you, that’s why.
To: ken5050; Jim Robinson
To: SteveAustin; All; Jim Robinson“Four years ago I didn’t feel GOPe was our primary problem. Now I do.”First, the GOP must die.
Everything else comes after that.
Every purge has been a bad idea. Made FR less interesting, and made the freepathons take longer.
Is that because Jim Rob is a petty, small-minded, idiotic, low-intelligence moron who can’t deal reasonably with other people who disagree with him?
So as much as I despise The Donald, and think conservative following him are confused, I hope there’s no purge.
Amidst all the “The Dems hate Trump, so he must be good” fa-la-la, one Freeper gets it :
like hearing Trump call a spade a spade (spades are trumps?). But he can’t win, and he can help the Dems. Just listen to them – they are having a field day and loving every minute of it.
This Freeper has stumbled onto the deep dark secret that the entire rest of the world has been privy to for the last three months – that Trump is risible, and he’s making the GOP look more and more like The Stupid Party.
Cruz and Rubio will both have a tough time winning. My money is on Walker.
One of the reasons we are past what may very well prove to be the point of no return is that many principled conservatives refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils. For the sake of your children and their children, stop making the same damn mistake over and over again. Vote AGAINST the socialist masquerading as an American, whoever that might be.
To: ken5050You purist!! How dare you post something contradicting our story line. You must be a dem troll, all the way from 1998. Didn’t you know that Trump is severely conservative because he said so when he announced… and he peed in the liberals’ cereal and made them cry./end sarcasm
To: Jim RobinsonBut for the long hall, I’m all in for Cruz. Trump has sizzle, but Cruz is the real deal.
Thank you Mr. Robinson. This is why this site is the premier conservative site. You actually support honest conservatives.
I agree with what you say, but I am not a big fan of banishment, in general.Hopefully, at some point, the current Trump-worshipers will deny that they EVER supported Trump. Maybe that’s for the best.
Well, they certainly managed to stuff their former heroes Dubya and Rove down the memory hole, so there’s that.
Some support Trump so much, I will be curious to see if they vote Jeb or Hillary if Trump tells them to.
To: demshateGodI don’t think the support for Trump is nearly as rabid and irrational as the support for Rudy was.
It is way worse. Trump supporters will abandon any beliefs they have, and the Constitution just because Trump (allegedly) “stands up.” Even though it’s clear he’s lying.
To: randita“Humility and faith are two qualities that all of our great presidents have possessed. Trump has neither. He is arrogant and prideful. He said that he has never asked God for forgiveness. That comment told me all I need to know about him.”
His speeches are littered with “I, I, I, me, me, me”, along with grand descriptions of accomplishments that eclipse those of everyone else. We rightfully skewer Obama for such unbridled egomania, but for some reason, Trump receives adulation for it.
Let him talk now. It’s useful. But he is not fit for the presidency.
To: tsowellfan“What does IBTZ stand for”
In the middle early 1800s (whenever Dewey Decimal gave libraries the decimal system in place of binary book serialization,) there was a big fight between the US and UK (partially Canada) about how to order books – left to right, or up or down, on shelves. This gave way to IBTS, a new way of indexing/cataloging books and archives that was based on letters and numbers. Some museums also used this for a number of months, others for literally years. Ultimately there was a shift to using “International Standard Book Number” not as a way of of organizing books, but as a way of identifying books, or IBTZ.
It’s essentially a mis-spelled comical reference to ‘throwing the book at someone’ who says the wrong thing.
