Do It Again

I’ve posted Black Friday by Steely Dan on Black Friday the last two years. It’s high time to post another Dan tune. In this instance, their first hit and most covered song.

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen wrote Do It Again for Steely Dan’s 1972 debut album, Can’t Buy A Thrill. I fell hard the first time I heard the song and never looked back. I hope nobody was following me…

There’s an oddity this week. I couldn’t find a version I like by a chick singer, so it’s all dudes; make that any major dude. So it goes.

We go back Jack and do it again with Steely Dan:

Here are two versions by Richie Havens. The first one is souped-up; the live version is acoustic and sounds more like the Richie we know and love.

Waylon Jennings. Say no more.

The Jolly Boys are a Jamaican folk combo. I saw them at Jazz Fest many moons ago. It was an unforgettable performance. I dig their cover of this Becker-Fagen classic too.

Let’s go back Jack and do it again with Eli Paperboy Reed. Oy such a nickname.

What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s song? This time, FCH regular Herbie Mann followed by the debut of Deodato.

Ready for some lagniappe? The Kinks with their own song of the same title:

That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to the late Walter Becker who is missed by Steely Dan fans everywhere. It’s what Jack and Faye would want. Never argue with them.

  1. Good Day to All,
Just wanted to note there is an excellent female vocalist version of Do It Again on Paul Hardcastle’s Hardcastle 1 CD.
