I’m Walkin’

It may not be a Carnival tune, but I do a lot of walking whilst ensconced in the Carnival bubble hence this selection.

I’m Walkin’ was written by Antoine Domino and Dave Bartholomew in 1956 and recorded early the next year. I was surprised to learn that it’s the most covered song in the Domino-Bartholomew catalogue. As you’ll soon see, it was recorded by several FCH regulars.

We begin at the beginning with the Fats Domino original, which was released on 2/3/1957:

Peggy Lee was one of the jazz singers most open to rock-n-roll. She recorded I’m Walkin’ during the British Invasion. If it was a counterattack, it failed but I still dig her version.

Doug Kershaw put a Southwest Louisiana spin on this week’s tune. Get fiddling, Doug.

Ella Fitzgerald. Say no more.

New Orleans native Harry Connick Jr. with a solo piano take on this week’s tune.

Finally, the Divine Diana Krall with a big band interpretation of the Domino-Bartholomew classic.

What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Duane Eddy followed by Count Basie.

That’s it for this week. Let’s toast the final weekend of Carnival 2024. Here’s hoping my legs don’t fall off from all the walking; yes, indeed. It’s what Mac, Irma, Allen, and Aaron would want. Never argue with them.
