If it’s Tuesday, it must be the fourth installment in the weekly series inspired by the 1991 Duke-Edwards Gret Stet governor’s race. A reminder of the unofficial slogan of the race from hell:

In 2024, we’re flipping that on its head and voting AGAINST the crook. It’s even more important.
Welcome to the Trump Did This edition. The This in question is his role in the destruction of the right to choose and the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Casey vs. Planned Parenthood. People often forget Casey, but it was the 1992 case in which three Republican Justices kept the Roe precedent alive. I miss unpredictable GOP appointees: David Souter was the last of the species.
The Indicted Impeached Insult Comedian kept few of his 2016 campaign promises. He did, however, keep his promise to appoint SCOTUS justices who would overrule abortion rights. Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett were his promise keepers as it were, but Sam the Sham Alito was the lord high executioner of the Roe line of cases.
The archaic 1864 Arizona statute making abortion illegal forced Trump to crawfish on his anti-abortion position. He squirmed, wiggled, and prevaricated. He usually only does the latter. It didn’t work: four decades of GOP anti-abortion absolutism made his “new position” untenable. Trump’s position is as cynical as that of Poppy Bush who was pro-choice until he was selected as Reagan’s running mate in 1980. Regan’s own flip flop on the issue came a few years earlier.
Vice President Kamala Harris has been on the stump making the Donald Trump Did This case. The folks at Politico Playbook provided a swell summary of her arguments:
- “We all must understand who is to blame. It is the former president, Donald Trump. It is Donald Trump who, during his campaign in 2016, said women should be punished for seeking an abortion.”
- “Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis. And that’s not a fact he hides. In fact, he brags about it.”
- “And as much harm as he has already caused, a second Trump term would be even worse. If Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban. How do we know? Look at his record. Congress tried to pass a national abortion ban before, in 2017, and then-President Trump endorsed it.”
Repeat after me: Donald Trump Did This.
The Kaiser of Chaos had plenty of help in dismantling the right to choose, especially from his frenemy Mitch McConnell who stole a SCOTUS seat for his party.
Repeat after me: Republicans Did This. No amount of deflection or projection can change that. They’ve been at it since 1976. Make them pay.
The last word goes to Amanda Shires with Jason Isbell:
