Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – year end clearance!

Everything must go!

I hope everyone had a decent Christmas / New Years.

Now for one last look back at Freeper Follies. Disguised as a retrospective, this is my chance to go through all the stupid that didn’t make its way into my posts for one reason or another. Just be glad I don’t haul the denuded Christmas tree over and throw it on the festering pile as well.

O’Donnell calls extending jobless benefits a ‘tragedy’
The Hill [Washington, DC] ^ | 12/7/10 | Shane D’Aprile

Posted on Tuesday, December 07, 2010 11:28:19 PM byNachum

Christine O’Donnell on Tuesday compared the “tragedy” of extending unemployment benefits to Pearl Harbor and the death of Elizabeth Edwards. “Today marks a lot of tragedy,” O’Donnell, (Snip) “Tragedy comes in threes,” O’Donnell said. “Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth Edwards’s passing and Barack Obama’s announcement of extending the tax cuts, which is good, but also extending the unemployment benefits.”

Christine is so good at getting to the root of an issue. She’s just like us, except she’s decided that she’ll never again need unemployment benefits.

I hope things work out for her between now and 2012.

Boehner to create women’s restroom adjacent to House floor (BIG GOVERNMENT AT WORK)
The Hill, Washington, DC ^ | 2010-12-01 | Molly K. Hooper

Posted on Thursday, December 02, 2010 7:08:23 AM byrabscuttle385

Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-Ohio) intends to commandeer a swanky office space adjacent to the House floor and build a women’s restroom for female lawmakers.

For years, men have had the luxury of using facilities located adjacent to the House floor, just outside the Speaker’s lobby. But women have had no such option.

If women need to powder their noses, they must instead go downstairs or to a restroom several halls away from the chamber.

But Boehner wants that to end, and plans to direct the Architect of the Capitol to construct a women’s bathroom in the space currently occupied by the House Parliamentarian.

Boehner said on Wednesday evening of his decision that “as we continue to evaluate ways to open up the people’s House, it’s encouraging to be able to make changes like this that are long overdue.”

Leaking Siberian ice raises a tricky climate issue
Yahoo! via AP ^ | 11/22/2010 | ARTHUR MAX

Posted on Monday, November 22, 2010 12:26:50 PM byshove_it

CHERSKY, Russia – The Russian scientist shuffles across the frozen lake, scuffing aside ankle-deep snow until he finds a cluster of bubbles trapped under the ice. With a cigarette lighter in one hand and a knife in the other, he lances the ice like a blister. Methane whooshes out and bursts into a thin blue flame.

Gas locked inside Siberia’s frozen soil and under its lakes has been seeping out since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. But in the past few decades, as the Earth has warmed, the icy ground has begun thawing more rapidly, accelerating the release of methane — a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide — at a perilous rate.

Some scientists believe the thawing of permafrost could become the epicenter of climate change. They say 1.5 trillion tons of carbon, locked inside icebound earth since the age of mammoths, is a climate time bomb waiting to explode if released into the atmosphere.

Mitt Romney: ‘If You See Me On Fox News, I’ve Decided To Run For President’
Mediaite ^ | 12/2/10 | Colby Hall

Posted on Thursday, December 02, 2010 10:46:12 AM byNachum

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is also a presumptive candidate for President in the 2012 election, which was a topic of conversation on The Tonight Show last night. Host Jay Leno opened the light, if not somewhat boring interview with questions about a potential White House bid, to which Romney replied, “If you ever see me sign up for a gig on Fox News, it’ll be a clear indication that I’ve decided to run for president,” adding “that’s not in the cards anytime soon, thanks.”

It was a gentle yet pointed dig at the cable news channel who includes on their roster a long list of news analysts and commentators who are considered to be GOP presidential hopefuls in 2012, including Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, John Bolton, and Rick Santorum. 2008 Presidential hopeful, and potential candidate for 2012 Mike Huckabee even hosts his own weekend program on Fox News, which has raised some questions about the symbiotic relationship between Fox News and the GOP presidential candidates.

Tea Party Caucus Takes $1 Billion In Earmarks
Natinal Journal Hot Line On Call ^ | Dec 2 2010 | Reid Wilson

Posted on Thursday, December 02, 2010 12:11:37 PM byworst-case scenario

Members of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus may tout their commitment to cutting government spending now, but they used the 111th Congress to request hundreds of earmarks that, taken cumulatively, added more than $1 billion to the federal budget.

According to a Hotline review of records compiled by Citizens Against Government Waste, the 52 members of the caucus, which pledges to cut spending and reduce the size of government, requested a total of 764 earmarks valued at $1,049,783,150 during Fiscal Year 2010, the last year for which records are available.

“It’s disturbing to see the Tea Party Caucus requested that much in earmarks. This is their time to put up or shut up, to be blunt,” said David Williams, vice president for policy at Citizens Against Government Waste. “There’s going to be a huge backlash if they continue to request earmarks”
********************************
What a disappointment! What is Bachmann going to say about this?

I thought at least the Tea Party Caucus wouldn’t be so hypocritical. They were very insistent on eliminating earmarks. They never said, “But only if everyone else does.” Where are their principles?

If the people we elect to get rid of the bums turn out to be bums themselves, what can we do?

Newt Gingrich: “We are not going to deport 11 million people”
Politico ^ | 12/2/10 | KENDRA MARR

Posted on Thursday, December 02, 2010 3:05:36 PM byWilliamHouston

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has a bold goal for the next decade: Overhaul the country’s immigration system so that every worker in the United States is legal.

“We are not going to deport 11 million people,” Gingrich said Thursday as he kicked off his first forum on Latino issues. “There has to be some zone between deportation and amnesty.”

A possible presidential candidate, Gingrich stressed that his target of establishing an entirely legal work force is “not a call for amnesty.” Rather, he said, it’s about applying common sense to the immigration debacle.

“Dos y dos son cuatro” (two plus two equals four), he said to chuckles. . .

If the GOP runs Newt Gingrich in 2012 on Juan McCain’s 2008 amnesty platform, they can get used to dealing with Obama for another 4 years. I’m not going to vote for another Bush or McCain under any circumstances.
