On Thursday afternoon on Twitter the discussion was about #RejectedObamaEntranceSongs, and this was my entry:
I’m on some kind of Rihanna kick lately. I blame the running. Two-thirds of her catalog is just perfect for that moment halfway over the hill when you’re thinking about dying so you don’t have to finish the route.
What would you like to see the president (doesn’t have to be this one, could be FDR or something) swagger onto the stage in time to?
A.
Not exactly as tribute, but could see Nixon or Shrub entering to Jocko Homo by Devo.
Wear Your Love Like Heaven
The Harder They Come
Just Dropped In
Crazy
Crackerbox Palace
or maybe one of the Bond femetunes
butbutbut i don’t like peppey happy song. mc ferrins don’t worry?
I can’t help it, I want to see Obama and Michelle take the stage to acknowledge his re-election to a Big Freedia song…watch the somehow-remaining intact after the results are in rightwing nuts’ heads explode. plus, I love NOLA Bounce…it makes me smile.
I think Obama should take the stage to AC/DC’s “Back in Black” — not because he’s African-American, but because ANYONE who is cool should take the stage to AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” including our hostess. Hell, my wife has it on her phone as her ringtone for me, and I’m a middle-aged white guy who hasn’t been mistaken for cool in nearly 30 years.
Romney, of course, should take the stage to Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You.” The disdain for the audience, the grievously wounded sense of entitlement so characteristic of conservatives claiming victimhoood — it all works.
A negative example comes to mind. Mitt Romney who has already embraced “Living in America” with it being the closing music for his speech.
Even though I’m in my mid 50s, I’ve managed to avoid seeing Rocky IV. I kind of got Kerry’s jab at Romney and Rocky IV, but a Rachel Maddow clip filled in a lot for me ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/48949500#48949500 ).
The clip also explains that “Living in America” is the entrance for Apollo Creed – who not only lost but was knocked out and literally died in the ring.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first song whose meaning has been completely subverted by singing without worrying about the message. Done in Church all the time. And I’m “BOOORN in the U S Ahhh”
