From these amusingly arch covers we can see why the great Martin found a lasting home at MAD, if not in album design! It’s only a pity history doesn’t record what Miles, Art or Johnson et al. thought of his dyspeptic vision gracing their LPs. At the moment, in fact, I’m streaming “Three Trombones” whose merry bop is from another universe of sensibility than Martin’s grey, coven-like figures, which look like escapees from the shadows of Chas. Addams.
