I was otherwise engaged when President Biden spoke on the first anniversary of the Dipshit Insurrection. The setting was statuary hall in the Capitol. It was an area that was desecrated by Trumpers posing as patriots when they were really poltroons.
Poltroon is an underused word that I hope to help revive. It means craven coward, which describes the Impeached Insult Comedian as he sat in the White House enjoying the spectacle of a Trump mob rampaging through the corridors of the Capitol. The poltroons were on the prowl as the man who dispatched them was safe and unsound at home. Not his home, the people’s home. Mercifully, the Kaiser of Chaos no longer lives there but in bitter exile at Mar-a-Doorn.
At least we were spared the spectacle of a live celebration of the worst day of the worst presidency in American history. We’ve had some lousy presidents, but none tried to stay in office by hook, crook, or riot. It’s all a sordid reality show for former President* Pennywise. The MSM wasn’t willing to carry the planned event live, so it was scuppered like a sinking ship one year to the day on which they tried to sink the ship of state.
Joe Biden was elected president because he was the antithesis of Trump. But it’s a tough time to be president. They get too much credit for the good and too much blame for the bad. The pandemic stubbornly survives despite Team Biden’s best efforts to kill or tame the beast. The senate is recalcitrant in the face of the Biden agenda.
The other day I wrote a piece denouncing the Man of La Manchin and the Sinematic Senator. Long-time reader Gratuitous pointed out that GOPers deserve most of the blame for the stalemate in Congress. He’s right: they’re poltroons too. They’re so afraid of their voters that they cower in the corner contemplating the reaction of former President* Pennywise and his demented dipshit supporters.
The MSM enables the Republican poltroons by NOT asking why they’re opposed to voting rights legislation or additional dilution of the filibuster. Voting rights legislation used to have bipartisan support. Senate Republicans abolished the filibuster when it comes to SCOTUS nominations. They should be held to account for their hypocrisy and craven cowardice. Ask Senator McConnell why he won’t support voting rights. He’s voted for them in the past. He’s just another poltroon.
I started writing this post with a different intent. It was to be called A Dagger At The Throat Of America, which is a line from Biden’s stirring Twelfth Night speech. Let’s circle back to the speech, which I watched last night on the YouTube:
It was a thematic speech about values that positioned Biden as the champion of the truth and Trump as a lying loser. Democrats tend to natter on about policy details, which are important, but speeches about sausage making don’t move people. That’s a lesson that Republicans learned from the Reagan presidency: messaging matters to the average person, details don’t.
I enjoyed the bits where Biden called Trump a lying loser but here’s the money passage:
You can’t love your country only when you win. You can’t obey the law only when it’s convenient. You can’t be patriotic when you embrace and enable lies.
Those who stormed this Capitol and those who instigated and incited and those who called on them to do so held a dagger at the throat of America and American democracy. They didn’t come here out of patriotism or principle. They came here in rage. Not in service of America, but rather in service of one man. Those who incited the mob, the real plotters who were desperate to deny the certification of this election, defy the will of the voters, but their plot was foiled.
It was a fighting speech with some of the strongest language ever used by Biden to describe the Dipshit Insurrection. It was a welcome antidote to the dispiriting discussion of what Manchin or Sinema will do. The details of legislation should be left to the technicians on the Hill. We need to be told WHY things are important as opposed to HOW we get there. The devil isn’t always in the details.
As evidence of coup plotting mounts, I have continued to call the Twelfth Night white riot the Dipshit Insurrection. It still fits. The rioters were stupidly following the command of their dipshit leader. Only an idiot could believe the Big Lie. Unfortunately, there are many idiots out there as well as cynical pols who use them to slake their lust for power. They’re poltroons, not patriots.
The image of a dagger at the throat of America and democracy is vivid. The Impeached Insult Comedian and his maniacal minions have done more than hold a dagger at the throat of America. In furtherance of their own stab-in-the back rhetoric, they stuck a dagger in the back of America one year ago and have continued to twist the knife hoping that democracy will bleed out.
Repeat after me: They’re poltroons, not patriots.
The last word goes to Jackson Browne:
