Saturday Odds & Sods: What A Day That Was

Every Day by Rene Magritte.

I’ve had a rough week dealing with hospital types over the scheduling of my treatment. I’ll spare you the details but it’s the reason I lack the oomph to write a full-blown Odds & Sods post. Your forbearance is appreciated. How lawyerly is that?

This week’s theme song was written by David Byrne in 1981 for his first solo album The Catherine Wheel. It’s the musical score for a Twyla Tharp dance program. David Byrne digs choreography, y’all. Is it a Scottish thing? Discuss amongst yourselves.

We have two versions of What A Day That Was for your listening pleasure: the Byrne original and Talking Heads live from Stop Making Sense.

The Talking Heads version is much better. I like this Kinks live version more than the studio OG as well.

We begin our second act by skipping it altogether. We still have a last word. It goes to The Bee Gees:

We begin our third act with our favorite stolen feature.

Separated At Birth Casting Edition: I still have the slave owning father of our country on my mind after pondering John McNaughton’s dreadful painting, Crossing The Swamp. Here’s GW and some of the actors who have played him.

Let’s kinda sorta lighten things up with this Willie Dixon tune performed by the J Geils Band:

Your Weekly Oscar: Another week, another OP doubleheader. This time, a Cole Porter tune:

Have I told you lately how much I love Oscar Peterson? That goes for King Zulu, 1949 as well.

The Best of Johnny: I love Art Carney. His character on The Honeymooners, Ed Norton, is funnier than a ferret down the trousers. What’s not to love about a man who won an Oscar playing opposite a cat in Harry and Tonto.

Here’s Art playing piano on The Tonight Show in 1973. It gets better: Johnny joins in on drums.

Saturday GIF Horse: Hoops great Jerry West died this week at the age of 86. He was the best pure shooter I’ve ever seen. The only player I’ve ever compared him to is Steph Curry. Jerry was that great.

The Junk Drawer: More unintentional comedy from soon-to-be former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak:

We have an alternate version of Rishi Sunak’s theme song:

Tweet Of The Week: Somehow I have become an Alito flag expert. This comes from one of our friends at Crooks & Liars:

Let’s close down this virtual honky tonk with some more music.

Saturday Closer: I’ve had France on my mind since Macron called a snap parliamentary election. It doesn’t get more French than La Vie En Rose. A reminder that the French founded New Orleans. That’s my feeble excuse for posting a Louis Armstrong version instead of Edith Piaf.

That’s all for this week. Since I’m having a low energy week, we’ll repeat this last word bat meme from Talking Heads:
