Holy Cow

I covered Carnival tunes last Sunday but I’m still craving New Orleans music. Allen Toussaint *was* New Orleans music for decades. He was also a helluva nice guy. I miss running into him and being called Chief.

Allen Toussaint wrote Holy Cow in 1966. It was a monster hit in the UK and a substantial hit in the US&A.

Allen wrote and produced this week’s tune for Lee Dorsey. That’s where we begin.

My favorite version of Holy Cow is by The Band. What’s not to love about Rick Danko’s lead vocal?

Former Squeeze keyboard player and current TV star Jools Holland chimes in with a  quirky take on the Toussaint classic.

Finally, the songwriter himself. Holy cow, what you doing to me?

What’s the Friday Cocktail Hour without an instrumental version of the week’s tune? This time, The Shadows.

That’s it for this week. Let’s toast the memory of Allen Toussaint. It’s what Danny, Mac, and Pete would want. Never argue with them.
