There’s more going on here than simply that moderation is a shitty strategy right now. It’s the elevation of moderation to a value in and of itself, in that it doesn’t really matter much anymore what you’re moderate about, so long as you profess to abhor “extremes” and speak in a quiet, soothing voice. And it’s crap, and going into the campaign season I can’t think of a more poisonous viewpoint to be infecting our discourse than the one that sees everything as good or evil only in terms of how non-offensive it is.
