A GoFundMe page titled, “We The People Will Fund The Wall,” has raised more than $7 million out of $1 billion as of Dec. 20. In less than an hour late on Thursday, donors contributed more than $500,000.
The page was set up by Brian Kolfage, a triple-amputee Air Force veteran who received the Purple Heart.
“As a veteran who has given so much, 3 limbs, I feel deeply invested to this nation to ensure future generations have everything we have today. Too many Americans have been murdered by illegal aliens and too many illegals are taking advantage of the United States taxpayers with no means of ever contributing to our society,” his page reads.
To: naeim.darziWhile I appreciate the sentiment, this is foolish.What exactly is the governmental mechanism that enables a direct cash donation to a specific government project?
Do people not pay enough taxes to push funding for the wall as it is?

To: Future Snake EaterJust off the top of my head, the government could sign a $0 contract to build the wall with a non-profit entity or with a contracting company whose costs are paid privately.Funding may be tantamount to legislative authorization, but does the President really lack authorization? I don’t think so.

From all I’ve seen/heard, it’s easy to donate money to the Treasury Department, but that doesn’t begin to get it directed to a specific project.
Trump is fighting this the smart way. If people want to pursue this GoFundMe as an act of symbolism, they can knock themselves out. But let’s not act like it will really be used to fund the wall.
