The World Is A Ghetto

I’m still bummed about the election, so this week’s Friday Cocktail Hour features a socially aware soul song guaranteed to vex wingnuts:

Don’t you know that it’s trueThat for me and for youThe world is a ghetto”

The World Is A Ghetto was written in 1973 by the members of War: Papa Dee Allen, Harold Brown, BB Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Lee Oskar, Charles Miller, and Howard E. Scott. It served as the title track of the smash hit album whose cover is this week’s featured image.

We begin with the single version and War live on The Midnight Special:

Next up, FCH semi-regular George Benson. Writing this feature has given me a new appreciation of his music:

A 21st Century version by Kandace Springs:

Finally, a great American band that just celebrated their 50th anniversary, Los Lobos.

What would the Friday Cocktail Hour be without instrumental versions of the week’s tune? This time, Ahmad Jamal and Sonny Stitt.

That’s it for this week. I propose a toast to the longest songwriting credit in FCH history. It’s what Labelle would want. Never argue with them.
